West Virginia’s ski resorts and secluded mountain trails
provide visitors countless winter sports opportunities

More than 800,000 people come to West Virginia each winter for great skiing, unbeatable scenery and the Mid-Atlantic’s best snow conditions and down-home hospitality.

West Virginia is considered among the best ski destinations in the East and Mid-Atlantic for the length of its season, high amount of natural snowfall and central location to major metropolitan areas. Four major alpine skiing resorts and numerous cross-country skiing and winter sports outfitters throughout the mountainous southern and northeastern parts of the state offer West Virginia visitors a variety of winter sports fun.

More than 75 percent of the state is forested, helping make for ideal woodland cross-country and snowshoe adventures. The state’s alpine resorts also have extensive snowmaking and night skiing capabilities, allowing them to open earlier in the season and stay open later than most ski areas in the region.

In addition to downhill skiing, all four alpine resorts allow snowboarding on all slopes and have designated snowboarding parks that feature a variety of stunt terrain. Ski areas and parks throughout the state feature sled and inner tube runs and rope tows for those more inclined to sit down while descending the mountain.

West Virginia’s pristine snow-covered forests and wilderness areas in the Monongahela National Forest and state parks are increasingly popular destinations for snowshoe trekkers. Several resorts and outfitters provide guided tours, equipment rentals and lessons for those who wish to explore miles of hiking trails blanketed by snow.

From major commercial resorts with modern lodges, massive ski lifts, dazzling nightlife and restaurants to solitary single-track cross-country paths and secluded cabins in the woods, West Virginia offers its winter visitors memorable adventures that fit any lifestyle.
